Seated in North Carolina on 7 acres of land you will find Yellow Chick Farm...
Brianne comes from a long line of farmers. Working the land runs through her veins. Five years ago, she started her own farm. Before that? Well, let's just say that animals, nature, and hard work have always been constants in her life. Her days now start at dawn and end long after the sun has set, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
If it has wings, she loves it! Brianne has Cochins (Bantam and large fowl), peacocks, Sebastapol geese, pheasant, Serama, quail - you name it! But it's her Silkies that really steal her heart (don't tell the other birds) and make every day worthwhile with their distinct look + sweet personality. With a focus on poultry she has always worked very hard to have show quality birds centered around quality over quantity.
When you're a farmer, no two days are exactly the same. There's always something new to learn, or a new challenge to meet. And while it's true that losing an animal is never easy and one of the hardest parts Brianne deals with, it's all worth it for the times when she can just sit outside with a cup of tea and watch her flock go about their business. She feels at peace with these animals - while simple, they love their lives.
Brianne feels the farm industry has changed from being something people thought they could never do on a small scale to now something lots of people are willing to try. She feels as if farming has become "cool". Although you need lots of training, the farm community is full of people who want to help teach their skills to support one another so more people can farm. This is one of the reasons Brianne loves the farm and chicken community - she has gained so much support from this community and learned so much. As a result, she wants to support others in being farmers and also work hard to build up what she has to provide proof of what good farming looks like. She thinks the future of farming is in more backyards on a small scale and also more like farm craftsmen who do something small scale but really perfect it so they can charge a premium.
Brianne's advice to someone interested in becoming a farmer is, "Just do it. It's hard sometimes yes, but it is worth it"!
